Today Nadine and I had a profound cultural/racial realisation on the often discussed topic of the classic 2004 movie ‘Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen’:
Nadine: Dude you know confessions of a teenage drama queen, I wanted to be Carla the mean girl because all the
mean girls were brunette in the 90s and that’s the closest you get to, like, a role model as an Asian
Me: I liked her because I wanted her hair
Nadine: Oh yeah me too
Me: This is actually such a profound and depressing thought
There’s something morbidly hilarious about two Asian girls feeling like the villains of teen movies were who we wanted to be because they had the same colour hair as us. ARE YOU SERIOUS. This is not great. Also the whole concept of Asians and the ‘model minority’ who don’t speak up and protest is pretty depressing and is a huge part of the reason why it’s taken so long for us to have Asian culture/characters on screen. Yay for The Mindy Project and Fresh Off The Boat!
